All About Satin Ribbon

Single-faced satin ribbon for crafts is a fabric that is characterized with a glossy surface on one side and a matte surface on the other. The slightly different color and texture of each side is due to a specific kind of weave that causes one side of the fabric to reflect more light than the other. During the middle ages, satin was made of silk and was only affordable for to the upper classes of society. Today, many satin fabrics are also made of polyester or cotton, making them accessible for anyone who wishes to use this super soft material. At Ribbons.com, we have a huge selection of satin made from polyester.

Natural and Synthetic Fibers

Some satin ribbon for crafts are made from natural material, like silk or cotton, while other types are made from synthetic fibers, like taffeta. Each type is woven differently, which affects the silkiness, texture, and shape of the satin. Duchess satin, for example, is stiffer and heavier—making it perfect for gowns—while charmeuse satin is very silky and drapes like water.

Satin Uses

While satin originated in China, it quickly became a very popular fabric and was exported around the world. From then on, satin was used in everything from royal clothing and gowns to athletic clothing and ballet shoes. Specifically, satin ribbons were in huge demand during the early 1900s, as they were used to accentuate clothing and accessories such as hats, purses, and shoes.

Satin Crafts

Satin ribbons are so beautiful and luxurious, we love using them for all of our crafts and projects. Some of our favorite satin ribbon craft ideas include accents for your hair or centerpiece decor, as these small creations highlight the delicacy and grace of the fabric.

Satin Flowers

Satin flowers can be used in your hair, on clothing, and even in faux bouquets! While there are several types of flowers you can make, the easiest is a tulip style that requires glitter, q-tips, glue, a candle, and satin ribbon about an inch wide. The q-tips, glitter, and glue are used to make the stem and center of the flower, while the ribbon is cut into short strips for petals. When you hold the tips of your satin petals near a flame, they curl a bit and give the ribbon a natural flower look.

Satin Butterflies

Butterflies look so much better when made with satin ribbon and pearl beads! Creating a butterfly in your favorite colors is easy when you choose three ribbon colors of different widths (1 ½”, 1”, and ¾”) and fold them into wings. The smaller ribbons nestle inside the larger ones to give the wings more color and depth. Adding beads to the tips of the wings and the antenna of the butterfly is an elegant finishing touch!
